BERLIN

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany, both by area and population, and remains the most populous city in the European Union. After World War II and following Berlin’s occupation by the former Soviet Union, the city was split into West Berlin and East Berlin, divided by the Berlin Wall. During the Cold War era, East Berlin was declared the capital of East Germany, while Bonn became the West German capital. Following Germany’s reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of all of Germany. Due to its geographic location and history, Berlin is often referred to as “the heart of Europe”. Today, Berlin forms a vibrant cultural hub with prominent landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Berlin Wall Memorial, and the Reichstag – showcasing a blend of modern architecture and historical sites.
