Munich, Germany
Munich, located in southern Germany, is the capital of Bavaria and considered one of the country’s most important cultural and historical centers. It is Bavaria’s largest city and the third largest city in Germany (after Berlin and Hamburg). Munich lies about 30 miles (50 km) north of the edge of the Alps and along the Isar River, which flows through the middle of the city. It is renowned for its grand palaces, art collections, beautiful parks, and world-famous beer culture, particularly during the annual Oktoberfest. Munich is famous for hosting the 1972 Summer Olympics from August 26 to September 11, 1972, and has a rich history as the former capital of an independent Bavaria. Notable landmarks include the Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche church with its iconic twin onion domes.
